The full grown females are about 25 inches tall. The males are smaller with a size of about 20 inches. The wing span for them can be from 50 to 60 inches. They have many different types of feathers that are interesting to examine individually. These layers offer warmth as well as the ability to fly gracefully and swiftly. They are considered to be the fastest of all owls in the world.

They are able to fly about 40 miles pr hour when necessary. However, they will often fly at a speed around 30 miles per hour. They have the largest eyes of all owls in the world. They do have excellent vision though as well as amazing hearing. Most experts believe this is because they are so highly adaptable to their surroundings. Even so, there are many that still want to investigate the matter further.

What we do know is that owls date back millions of years. From the fossils we have found for other species, they were more than twice the size that they are today. The actual changes in size though significantly vary based upon the species. There are many unanswered questions when it comes to their evolution process and perhaps one day we will have more to share about it with some certainty. What is the sound that you think of when the owl comes to mind?

The who who sound is what you get from the Great Horned Owl. This can be a very loud and long call or a soft and short one. The meaning behind those calls is what determines how they will sound. The males are the most vocal, calling out to establish their territory, to warn predators to stay away, and to find females that they may be able to mate with.

No… owls will only swim if they must, if they have accidentally fallen into a body of water for example. Because owls feathers are not waterproof, they are able to fly silently. When an owl gets wet their feathers become waterlogged and this means they lose their ability to fly and their ability to keep warm. Owls typically avoid any sort of contact with a human being.

If you find out that an owl is lurking somewhere around your property, make noises. Yelling, shouting, and clapping is what owls are afraid of. Increasing human activities in the presence of owls can make them go away. That means an owl can see to its right by turning its head to its left, and vice versa. If you were to try to turn your head that far, you would tear tendons and rupture blood vessels and arteries in your neck.

But an owl has several special anatomical features that allow for this head-turning ability. To start, owls have just one socket pivot connecting their heads and bodies, while humans have two, which limits our range of motion, according to National Geographic. Owls also have many vertebrae, which further enhances their range of motion. In addition, an owl's circulatory system is designed to accommodate this ability.

The birds have a network of backup arteries which supply nutrients when blood vessels are clamped by their head turning. This ability to turn their heads so far from side to side is actually a necessity. Owls can't rotate their eyes in their sockets, so they must turn their heads to see anything not directly in front of them.

Owls are excellent hunters, but they don't rely on their sense of smell to find unsuspecting prey. They actually don't have much of a sense of smell at all, according to The Owl Trust.

Instead, they rely on a keen sense of hearing to find their prey. Not having a sense of smell allows owls to hunt some species that most other animals avoid, namely skunks, because of their noxious discharge. Not being able to smell isn't that unusual among birds of prey. Most, including eagles and hawks, can't smell, the Owl Trust reports. The turkey vulture is rare among raptors in that it has an excellent sense of smell, which it uses to sniff out animal carcasses.

Most birds make noise while flying because of the turbulence in the air created by flapping their wings. And as you would expect, bigger birds with bigger wings creature more turbulence and, therefore, more sound. But not owls. They fly almost silently. So how do they do it?
